I came across a great guy about 7 years ago or so named William Mathieson. He’s a Marine that has an excellent spirit and authenticity that most people lack and admire. He’s started a project with the goal of helping non-profits raise money, like he’s been doing for Toys for Tots for years.
BDT: So, Big Will, what’s the story behind inspYrelife.com?
William: inSPYRE Life is a project of mine that I had been sitting on for sometime. The idea originated from the public’s response to my work ethic at the local fitness center. As you know, through our friendship, my road to recovery from all of the surgeries I have had, has been a long and hard fought battle. It appeared that each time I was ready to begin to rebuild my body, I would face another challenge. I would get my broken body up at 0500 and rumble to the gym every morning and put forth the best effort I could hoping that I would not have to face any additional down time. As I plugged away at getting stronger, I would get so lost in my own world of what my ‘New Normal” was that I was oblivious to the influence I was having on the people around me. The gym environment is one that breeds it’s own inspiration. To me, I was just another gym rat trying to tighten a few muscles and lose a bit of a spare tire. (I had ballooned up to 225lbs.) It wasn’t until a cold January day when I was approached by one of the members that I truly had an understanding of who I was becoming. I remember it very vividly as it made a huge impact on the way that I would conduct myself from that point forward.
My normal routine was to go in with my I-pod blaring through my ear buds and my blinders on with the exception of the next weight machine I was going to tackle next.
This particular morning I had attempted to do some treadmill work, which did not go very well. When I had enough, I stopped and stood there with, what probably appeared to the other members, a look of disappointment on my face (Remind you, I was still listening to my playlist at a bone jarring, Spinal Tap registering 11) when one of the members approached me and tapped me on the shoulder. Scared half to death, I ripped the air buds out of my ears and turned to see this face. This face that had obviously been waiting for the perfect moment to tell me something. She apologized for startling me and I, of course, told her that no apology was necessary. And then she said those words that changed my perspective forever. She looked me dead in the eye and said
“You know, there are mornings when the alarm goes off and I think to myself, I can miss today. It doesn’t matter. But then I think about the one legged Marine who shows up every morning and doesn’t complain or whine and suddenly I am inspired to get here and get to work. So, I just wanted you to know that you inspire me.”
When someone offers you that information I think you have a responsibility to try and do something with it. My response to those people quickly turned to accountability. After thanking them for the compliment, I would put it back in their court. I have inspired them. Inspired them to do what? Once they walk out the door, does the inspiration go with them or do they leave it at the Gym door and pick it up, again, when they arrive the next morning. So when I came home, I did so with a very heavy heart, realizing for the first time that my Handicap was actually something much more. It was a huge opportunity. An opportunity to try and give the world a way to do more with some very powerful words. My challenge was to find a way to give people an outlet to not only tell someone how they are inspired but to also show them. How was I going to accomplish this? What could I bring to the table? It really didn’t take long (24 hours) to conceptualize that I wanted to accomplish this through a charitable donation or through purchasing a gift and sending it to them.
I sat awake that night thinking of how. How could I make a difference? In the span of two days I had drawn the logo and jotted down, a very raw, business plan of what I wanted the inSPYRE Life brand to represent. I wanted to make it all about the people in life that we seldom see. The people who inspire us everyday from a far. Then I stepped back and realized that inspiration does not necessarily have to come from someone. Some people find inspiration in places they have visited or a spiritual experience they may have had.
In short, the drawing went to a graphic designer who turned into an image and then I created the web site, Social media and the store so that there was some substance to it. I was very careful not to release any images until I had filed for my Trademark. I am not a cynical person but I do know the necessities of protecting one’s self image.
The web site has been designed the way it is on purpose. I wanted it to be very simple to navigate and for the user to be able to find what they need as quickly as the needed to. Not a lot of flashy bells and whistles.
The ultimate goal of inSPYRE Life is to make it into a non-for Profit organization. As it stands now, 20% of the proceeds from the gross sale (before taxes) will be donated to the charity chosen by the customer. In the easily navigated Store, there is a drop down menu that lists various certified charities that one can choose from. How does this differ from some organizations? Many offers that are similar will donate a portion of the PROFITS. For me it was important to put less in my pocket and more into the beneficiaries pocket. As the Company begins to make a profit, then the percentage donated will begin to rise accordingly.
BDT: So who all is involved in making this a success?
William: Who is inSPYRED Life? For now, it is just my wife, Amy, and I. We have not gone out and searched for any Capital investors as we feel that it would take away from our donation margin. Also, an investor is more concerned with his return and not necessarily on the human return that may come from it. I just don’t think that our plan is appealing enough to investors who would like a more substantial R.O.I.
BDT: What can we expect from you and Amy in the future?
William: inSPYRE Life, currently, is run from home and will be until the foreseeable future. The only thing we would have to move for is warehouse space. All the website management, Virtual Store front, and accounting can all be done from the house. When the business becomes more well known and the inventory outgrows our house, we will then look to move into a proper facility. There are NO plans to open any retail outlets or to have a store presence of any kind. This, again, would take money away from the charities due to the Cost of Doing Business.

Well, sorry for the lack of posts lately, but we’ve been incredibly busy putting Dallas Beer Kitchen together! Things are coming along nicely! If you follow us on Facebook, you’ve seen that the permits have been acquired and work has officially begun! We look forward to having a beer with you soon!
It’s a pretty simple reason. My dad was dying and in the hospital in July of 2011, where I had some long conversations with him. One of those conversations was about his favorite place on Earth. As an avid traveler, I was curious what that would be, since he visited lots of different places. When asked, he answered without hesitation – “Panama.” And my “Why?” makes perfect sense if you were to have known him. And I’m sorry you didn’t.
Well, his reasoning encompassed a few different things – first and foremost, blonde latinas. Not the scenery you were thinking of, was it? He also loved the ocean, which probably has something to do with those blonde latinas again. But, I truly know from all of the trips we took to the coast that my dad could swim like a fish and loved diving into the waves. He’d be out there forever. He loved it so much I can’t believe that he didn’t request to have his ashes spread at sea.
So here begins my trip to understand the dreams of my father and walk in his footsteps a bit.
If ever you find yourself in Panama City, do not – I repeat, do not – visit Istmo Brew Pub. Looks cool, sounds cool, cabbies love it, but they don’t know shit. It smells like water trash outside on the patio, the beer tastes like cigar ash and the food is worse than microwavable dinners…please god, I would give a fortune for a Patio burrito in this fucking place. Now, there was an upside – Gerard Butler was partying at the table next to us. Random, very random…
What trip to Panama would be complete without a visit to the glorious Panama Canal? Well, we made it our first destination. Lots of tourists everywhere with different languages bouncing around, but don’t believe the word that English is typical. Maybe on the other side of the country by Costa Rica, but not by the City. Spanish is not only the official language people, it is the only language. We stretched our muy poquito Espanol to it’s limit, beginning here. The locks were utterly amazing to see in action. They managed to push some monster ships through there, very comfortably.
In another part of the Canal, there’s a drawbridge that allows you drive across the bottom. Not expected, but incredibly welcome when it’s this big of a surprise. We were just on our way up north to Colon! Speaking of which…stay…the…FUCK…away from Colon. Locals don’t go there in the daylight.
Ancon Hill is the highest point within the city, which can give you an amazing view atop it’s 654 feet. Fairly steep, it can be a decent hike for a determined walker or a quick cab ride for one who isn’t able. I tried to bribe my way onto the radio tower on top of the hill, but they weren’t having it. Who knew bribes weren’t taken in Central America? From here, we went back down the hill, laid on a plush green lawn and read a book for a little while. If it sounds like a little piece of heaven, you’re correct…

Yes you read that right! After months of preparation and due diligence the Best Damn Things foursome have finally secured a lease and work on the area’s newest craft beer and food destination known as Dallas Beer Kitchen has commenced.
Located at 1804 Greenville Ave next to Good Records, Dallas Beer Kitchen is on tap to anchor the quickly growing craft beer mecca forming on Lowest Greenville Avenue in Dallas.
Dallas Beer Kitchen will retain a meticulously curated beer program and offer some of the city’s best bar food served by a down-to-earth, knowledgeable staff.
With an impressive, ever-changing selection of 30 imported, domestic and local micro-brews on draught and many more by the bottle, we plan to be the headquarters for craft beer lovers in Dallas.
While Dallas Beer Kitchen will boast a carefully selected list of only the best beers, that doesn’t mean we will fall short on our food. Utilizing fresh local ingredients, our made-from-scratch daily menu will have something to please every palate and set the standard in pairing fun food with beer.
(Expect awesomeness such as Brisket Burgers, Movie Theater Popcorn, Tellicherry Pepper Ribs and Fried Biscuits!)
Inside Dallas Beer Kitchen the great conversation, properly served pints, friendly and knowledgeable service and terrific food will all be accented by the beautiful historic building, circa 1930.

As you know, we are constantly on the search for the best of best. But during our campaign we occasionally find the worst of the worst. Enter Stateside Pie & Beer in Mesquite, Texas.
Stateside is located at 1335 North Peachtree in the old Johnny Carino’s building. Interestingly enough Stateside is owned by Fire Up Inc., the same corporation that owns Carino’s. And they seem to have taken the same old suburban corporate chain restaurant way of thinking and injected it right into our personal favorite type of establishment; a craft beer and artisan pizza place.
I could go on for days about what bothers me so much about Stateside but for all our sakes I will keep it brief.
The menu says 100% Made From Scratch. It’s actually 100% total bullshit. You needn’t look beyond the ”soft” pretzel appetizer to figure that out. We were served frozen Super Pretzels that had apparently been left over from the night before as they had the consistency of a baguette. Keeping it consistent, the accompanying side of “beer cheese” sauce was rancid and completely inedible as well.
Next up, the pizza. It was absolutely no better than our starter. It had an overall metallic taste that is most associated with sauce that comes from a can. Hmm. We ordered the “thin” with mushrooms and pepperoni. The mushrooms were also…you guessed it…from a can and the pepperoni was in no way sliced right off of a fresh sausage. Again, it’s 100% bullshit.
The beer? Well, it’s a semi-craft selection with no emphasis placed on quality. They even have a few of their “own” beers to choose from. Although this is just more trickery, as they are not a brew pub and actually buy “their” beer from Circle Brewing in Austin.
You can get better pizza at ANY place in town. In fact, if you want the best, check out my list of favorites by style HERE.
And if it’s craft beer you’re after, you can do better at ANY craft beer place in town as well.
Do yourself a favor. Don’t support the corporate giants. Especially when they try so slyly to pass off a place like Stateside with the sole purpose of taking full advantage of a growing trend without putting one ounce of effort into it. There is way too many local owners of local pubs doing it right and for all the right reasons.
This burger is absolutely unbelievable. I mentioned that it was “the best” on Twitter – which quickly started a shitstorm between the co-owner, Jack Perkins, and multiple bloggers. Some people are adamant that they won’t buy a burger here because of Jack’s attitude. You’ll see this all over Yelp. I can understand it. I personally think he’s just having fun and that he doesn’t like critics. In spite of his online sarcasm and smart-assitude, the place has excellent customer service and great product. To everyone else who judges the place on a few comments, don’t go back. And on my end let me clarify – “best” is subjective and a matter of perception and taste. So, okay there may be no “best”. But, there are favorites to individuals. Jack has a point when he says that. It’s like judging art – masterpiece to one person is a pile of painted poop to another. What was awesome is that they fucked up my order – in the best possible way. I didn’t ORDER grilled jalapenos…just grilled onions…but I LOVED grilled jalapenos. And now I’ll always order them. Not too hot, still crunchy with a little bite. Fresh and green. Complements the burger, which is juicy and amazing, between a grilled bun, with a great texture. Not too chewy, but has some tug to it. Wash it down with a Sculpin IPA or Boulevard Wheat (among others).
So, okay this may not be the best painting in the world, but who can decide that? Not I. But…it’s still pretty fucking awesome. And one of my favorites.
